What is a Credit or Debit Card?

Credit and Debit cards look the same, but the way they are used is quite different.

Credit cards are based on credit, which is sort of like a small amount of money that a bank gives you with your promise to pay them back. Debit cards are based on your checking account, so you already have the money that you are spending with a debit card, and you don’t have to pay anyone back for what you spend.

These cards are swiped by a cashier when you purchase an item, and are used instead of giving them cash. If you use a credit card or debit card, you’re promising the business that you can pay them later. Usually, the money that you spend comes out of your account after a short processing time.
