Real vs. Counterfeit

Counterfeit (pronounced counter-fit) money is fake money that is made with the intent of using it like real money. It’s not quite like play money! Counterfeit money usually tries to blend in with real money, so that it can stay undetected. Play money is made with different colors and is smaller than real money so that people easily recognize it as fake money. Creating counterfeit money is a crime, and gets people into serious trouble with the government. Real money looks like this, and can be identified by the texture (remember, it doesn’t feel like paper, it feels more like cloth), a visible watermark, and the serial number.
